Lafayette Teacher Tapped as Kids’ Champion

FCPS Selects McPherson as October’s Honoree

Fayette County Public Schools has chosen Sherri McPherson, an English teacher at Lafayette High School, as the Kids’ Champion for October 2025. Each month, our district recognizes an outstanding member of Team FCPS who makes a real difference in students’ lives. McPherson displays exceptional dedication to her students and embodies these key champion characteristics: innovation, advocacy, empathy, knowledge, and a positive attitude.

The person who nominated her wrote: “Mrs. McPherson has the innate ability to know what her students need. As an English teacher, she embraces culturally responsive approaches. How many educators do you know who can use Tupac to expose students to contemporary literature?! Sherri understands that every child is unique and sees them for who they are. Sherri has served as head chaperone for Lafayette Band and is currently adviser for the Lafayette Times as well as Student Y sponsor (KYA/KUNA). In all of these roles, I have seen her nurture kids who have felt like they didn't belong, support them when things got hard, and fight passionately for them to have all the opportunities they deserve. As a result, her kids are loyal, respectful, and more importantly academically successful. One thing I love about Sherri is her preparation. At the end of every school year, the first thing she does is restock her class library. She asks any and everyone what their kids are reading; it is a diverse library that allows her students to see themselves in various experiences.

“Many people see Sherri as a quiet soul who flies under the radar. When that may be true, what I see is a phenomenal educator of 27 years who has dedicated her life to the children of Fayette County Public Schools. She teaches with joy, advocates with fire, learns with discernment, and loves with her whole heart.”

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins surprised McPherson this week at school with the Kids’ Champion Award, sponsored by Forcht Bank. The Fayette County Board of Education will also salute her at their Oct. 27 action meeting.

If you know a Kids’ Champion who advocates for students and fosters a positive environment where all can thrive, you can recommend them for this districtwide recognition!
