SCAPA Lafayette Senior Wins Vocal Competition

SCAPA Lafayette Senior Wins Vocal Competition

Music students from throughout the country were invited to the 21st annual Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition, and senior SCAPA Lafayette voice major Janeway Howard earned first-place undergraduate honors. The Pearse and Deirdre Lyons Award includes a full-tuition scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Kentucky and a $10,000 cash stipend. This is the first time a Fayette County Public Schools student has won this prestigious award since its inception in 2006.

Previous winners have gone on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, the Lincoln Center, Broadway, and international opera programs, and have become professors and artistic directors at well-known institutions throughout the world.

Sixteen finalists took the stage at the UK Singletary Center for the Arts to compete for more than $700,000 in prizes and scholarships. Judges selected multiple winners in undergraduate and graduate categories.

Elena Boyle, a senior at Lafayette High, placed fourth and received the Barbara Rouse Kentucky Prize. This one-time $5,000 award, donated by the Rouse family in honor of a supporter of UK Opera Theatre, goes to an incoming undergraduate student born and/or educated in Kentucky.
